Abstract

We are working on a model of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1)-induced cell death based on multinuclear giant cells or ‘syncytia’, which allow cell death to be studied at a higher level of spatial resolution than can be achieved with normal (uninuclear) cells. The fusion of somatic cells resulting in the formation of syncytia is a normal developmental process, but nonphysiological cell fusion results in cell death.
