Abstract
The phrase ‘beautiful and useful laws of God’ comes from a letter the young Daniel H. Burnham wrote to his mother. Knowledge of Burnham's religious beliefs is profoundly important for a deeper, more nuanced understanding of his intentions and motivations for the 1909 Plan of Chicago. This influence is underestimated, in part, because it has no overt, dramatic representation in the plan and is overshadowed by the apparently contradictory but captivating rendered perspectives.
