Abstract

The first chapter to draw on the qualitative interviews makes plain the discursive contest over the truth of sex as a “battleground” fought out in the bodies and souls of LGBTQ+ people. Vesper had been an enthusiastic leader in several PCC and other congregations, and initially sought out ex-gay therapy, believing in line with his PCC church’s commitment to the transformation discourse that his homosexuality was a sign of brokenness. However, Vesper eventually came out, left his PCC church, and criticised his former tradition from a reverse discourse perspective. Yule believed that his LGBTQ+ orientation would condemn him to rejection and hell, but eventually found scientific explanations grounded in the reverse discourse liberating.
