Abstract

Based on an Amicus Brief (a legal document submitted to the court relating to a case brought by the Nonhuman Rights Project on behalf of Happy the Elephant), this paper holds that the treatment of Happy the captive elephant is contrary to Christian ethics and the teaching of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. Seven considerations are enumerated concluding that since God has the right to have creatures treated with respect, denying Happy her natural bodily life and integrity is a sin against God. While we have drawn on Anglican sources for this essay, our arguments are strong enough and important enough to be considered by all Christians.
