Abstract

Old field, thicket and barren (prairie-like) vegetatio-n have been sampled on 14 small areas over limestone near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Fields are characterized by high percentages of annual, grass, introduced, and weed taxa. They are floristically most similar to and presumably related successionally to Juniper-dominated thickets. Barren sarnples cover a wide site range, but only the dry forms will persist- this because of droughty soils. Floristically these last areas are most strongly related to other Southern Barren vegetation (composite list) and certain areas in the Central Basin of Tennessee and cedar barrens of southern Ohio.
