Abstract

The NI, NBr, and NCl radicals have been synthesized from nitrogen and halogen atoms produced in a microwave discharge and subsequently trapped in solid argon at 12 K. The b 1Σ+↔X 3Σ− transition has been observed in both absorption and laser emission experiments, and the spectroscopic parameters are compared to gas phase values for NBr and NCl. Constants for NI are reported for the first time. Vibrationally unrelaxed emission is observed and discussed in terms of current models.
