Abstract
The azeotropic dehydration of ZrOCl 2·8H 2O has been carried out at 37 °C, 62 °C, 80 °C and 110 °C. The products were examined by elemental and OH analysis, IR spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis. The experimental evidence is best interpreted in terms of the formulations: [Zr 4(OH) 8(H 2O) 16]Cl 8·5H 2O, [Zr 16(OH) 34O 5(H 2O) 49]Cl 20 and [Zr 12(OH) 28O 4(H 2O) 30]Cl 12. The elimination of hydrogen chloride and the formation of terminal OH groups followed by olation in the solid state is suggested as a possible mechanism for the formation of the polymeric species.
