This is a good book for the casual reader and for the reader wishing to obtain an accurate and substantial survey of axon physiology and pathophysiology. Its 34 chapters are up-to-date and contain an excellent bibliography of original literature and review articles. Although the book is multi-authored, it is sufficiently cross-referenced to be used as a comprehensive textbook. Chapter 1 is an historical overview by Sir Andrew Huxley, which provides an entertaining and informative account of the work leading up to the Hodgkin-Huxley theory of membrane potentials. The remaining chapters are divided into two major sections, the first one covering the normal axon and the second one covering the principles of axonal pathophysiology.
