Abstract

Some of the most pioneering discoveries in immunology, e.g. the dichotomy of the lymphoid system and the extrinsic origin of stem cells in primary lymphoid organs, have been made using the avian immune system. A considerable amount of information has been accumulated but the immune system in birds is still poorly understood compared with the murine or human immune systems, and experimental studies have been confined almost exclusively to chickens. This review discusses some of the major findings concerning the avian immune system.
