Abstract

The automation of an online thermolysis setup with GC detection has been carried out using a graphical programming package (Labview from National Instruments) together with GC control software (Chemstation from Hewlett Packard). As a result a multi functional apparatus was created, using a standard PC, which can handle and control a gas phase experiment including variation of temperature, residence times, concentrations and multiple sampling. The various parts of the automation are treated in detail. As an example the thermolysis of 3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyran (chroman) is presented as a model compound for lignin and low rank coal pyrolysis.
