Abstract
Witney Sewage Treatment Works has been established as an evaluation and demonstration facility for automatic control equipment and techniques. Routine operation of the plant has been maintained by its automatic control system. Assessments of several of the main control functions have shown benefits which include cost savings, better operation and early warning of equipment failure. Further work is necessary to perfect the monitoring of the effluent quality. The evaluation of current instrumentation coupled with general operational experience are providing information for the UK Water Industry and contributing to the development of user specifications.
