Abstract

1. 1. The pneumococcal cell wall contained amino acids, hexosamines, muramic acid and sugars. The wall components of muramic acid phosphate and galactosamine-6-phosphate were greatly changed by the nutritional manipulation of culture medium. 2. 2. The autolytic enzyme exhibited the hydrolytic activity to remove amino acids, glucosamine, galactosamine, and sugars from the cell wall; this preparation contained amidase as well as glycosidases. 3. 3. The purified enzyme hydrolyzed Cwl cell wall in a way that the wall components removed were distributed in different molecular-size fractions. It hydrolyzed C-polysaccharide in another way so that the components removed were found in the same fractions.
