Abstract

In this introduction to this special publication of JCCD, the principles of ethnography are explained and placed within the domain of social research. Issues such as the role of interpretation in science, the balance of subjectivity and objectivity in social research, and beliefs about science in American culture all contribute to the evaluation of qualitative research in general and ethnographic research in particular The value of ethnographies for clinicians and teachers as well as researchers is addressed in an overview of the papers that follow.
