Abstract

One of the eternal questions in the visual arts, including architecture, is that of the distinction between invention and tradition. Appropriation – copying, or borrowing – is a mechanism accepted in contemporary art and common for nineteenth-century Beaux-Arts architects, but is now loaded with cultural anxiety for contemporary architects. This alphabetical list of English language synonyms for appropriation aims to show just how far the horror and delight in copyright infringement is embedded in our fears, and also in our desires.
