Our ambition is that the Journal will be a well balanced one, impartial on current topics; comprised of articles of high scientific order, of views and opinions of those who are skilled in their respective fields. Together with items of topical interest and reviews of books.’ This issue was comprised of 10 invited articles by Deans of dental schools at the University of Manchester, University of Toronto, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, University of Otago, University of Adelaide, University of Western Australia, as well as the Director of the Commonwealth Bureau of Dental Standards and the Director of the Institute of Dental Research (Sydney). Most of these articles focused on issues of dental education and research, and the challenges which lay ahead. In this issue, goodwill messages of congratulations and encouragement were published from Presidents of the British Dental Association, American Dental Association, New Zealand Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association, Dental Association of South Africa, and British Medical Association. In this first issue advertising was abundant with 53 pages being devoted to advertising of dental products and related items (Figs 3 and 4). News items from abroad were published by ‘foreign correspondents’. Activities of state branches and book reviews were also features of this new Journal.
