ABSTRACTThe implementation of a National Research and Academic Network has been a matter of growing importance to the Australian higher education and research community for some years. Over the last decade Australia has seen similar projects established and intensively used in peer nations, and the present lack of an Australian national network infrastructure for academic and research use is very much an anomalous situation.Since 1982 various aspects of the establishment of such a network have been the subject of attention from the academic and research community, with the effort to establish a national network intensifying over the last two years.
