Abstract
The American university developed from European precedents to become a distinct institution. In the United States, the precedents were largely English. The campus became the manifestation of the organization of New World universities in the United States. The characteristics of contemporary campus design are explored in a case study of the Auraria campus in Denver, Colorado (U.S.A.). A history of the Auraria campus is provided, followed by a summary of the unique institutional arrangements among the schools which share the space. The regional context, site location, and physical environment of the setting are described. A specific example of the design of the major Auraria campus mall is presented.
