Abstract

The hearing loss of aging is usually of the presbycusis type. This condition may be manifested by loss of speech discrimination and, possibly, recruitment, which limit the successful use of a hearing aid.Varying degrees of tension, fear, nervousness, poor health, etc., also contribute to the problem of determining the value of a hearing aid for elderly persons.Use of an audiogram to indicate the extent of hearing loss, and tests of bone conduction, to determine the type of hearing loss, will aid the physician in advising patients whether or not to use a hearing aid.
