Abstract

In a nationwide postal survey of 946 respondents, the viewers' uses and of Swedish broadcasted Sunday morning worship services were studied. An hypothesis that watching TV worship services is less burdensome than, but functionally similar to, attending services in church and that, as a consequence, TV services will displace church attendance, was investigated. The results show that watching TV services is experienced as less burdensome than attending church and that watching TV services, for a majority of the viewers, provides the same amount of over-all gratification as attending church. However, watching TV worship services provides different kinds of gratification than attending church. Thus, watching TV services should not be regarded as functionally similar to attending services in church. Only for Ss with poorer individual and environmental possibilities for attending church, is watching TV worship services functionally similar to attending church. For other Ss, frequent TV service viewing is associated, above all, with nonreligious experiences.
