Abstract
Webster's defines “attribute” as an inherent characteristic; a word describing a quality. Robert Sheriff (in The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Exploration Geophysics, 3rd edition ) defines “seismic attribute” as a measurement based on seismic data, such as envelope amplitude (“reflection strength”), instantaneous phase, instantaneous frequency, polarity, velocity, dip, dip azimuth, etc. This special section on seismic attributes extends the classical definition of seismic attribute technology; i.e., most of the papers describe not only seismic attributes but sophisticated workflows and techniques using multiple seismic attributes that are integrally related to the geology and/or calibrated to reservoir properties.
