Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to study the attachment of the lateral pterygoid muscle to the meniscus. Forty-two adult human cadavers were dissected by the superior approach. The observations were made, and the medial portion of the base of the skull was sectioned to the articular fossa. The attachment was then observed from the medial view. The meniscus and lateral pterygoid muscle were removed and sectioned for histologic study. The following observations were made: 1. The superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle is attached to the anterior portion of the meniscus. 2. Fibers of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle also are attached along the medial surface of the meniscus. 3. Some of these fibers are attached along the medial inferior portion of the meniscus. 4. The inferior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle is attached to the pterygoid fovea.
