Abstract

Three different problems connected by the theory of internal conversion are discussed. (i) The influence of the atomic screening of the wave functions on the bound and free electrons as well as on the internal conversion coefficients is discussed. A semi-empirical procedure is suggested, which includes more or less correctly the screening effects in atomic calculations. (ii) The effective Coulomb field and its limits are discussed for the M-shell. (iii) New theoretical M/L total shell ratios of internal conversion are presented, where screening is taken into account. The semi-empirical rule that the total M/L shell ratios are about 0.3 up to a factor of two is verified numerically.
