Abstract

The Atomic Energy Commission Nevada Operations Office is responsible for all of the United States testing of nuclear devices, whether for peaceful or military use. Predictions and evaluations of the radiological and ecological effects from nuclear detonation experiments are important in planning for these tests. These effects-evaluation studies have made the AEC one of this country's major sponsors of bioenvironmental research. How Amchitka Island was selected as a supplemental test site is described.
