Abstract

Summary Previously, the grammatical atmosphere effect has been shown to operate within a sentence. One experiment found that atmospheres are effective also in entire narratives. A closely similar experiment confirmed the finding. Ss (N = 326) were allocated to four treatments: an unbroken or broken narrative containing many plurals and an unbroken or broken narrative containing many singulars. Responses depended on the plural or singular nature of the material but not on whether the narrative was broken or not.
