Abstract
Ataxia is the term used to describe incoordination of voluntary movement. In children ataxia is usually an important indicator of disease of the nervous system, especially but not exclusively involving the cerebellum. Recognising ataxia in young children and distinguishing it from other motor disorders can be difficult. This article describes an approach to the clinical examination and diagnosis of the child with ataxia. Some of the more important causes of ataxia are discussed in detail, whilst other causes are listed in the tables.
