Abstract
This chapter addresses the importance of effective supervision in harnessing the learning potential of experiential legal education. The title of this chapter highlights the importance of supervision from multiple perspectives: those of the student, the supervisor and the law school. The chapter questions the convenient assumptions that are sometimes made about the effectiveness of lawyers as student supervisors. It also addresses the importance of more effectively preparing students for the supervisory relationship.Having considered the importance of supervision, the chapter then examines the supervision landscape in Australian clinical legal education as a case study of the importance of context in framing supervision. It then draws on the supervision literature from other disciplines, particularly in the health area, with the aim of building our collective understanding of supervision practices that are sustainable in the way they support students and supervisors.
