Abstract

The association of primary varicella infection and serious Group A P-hemolytic Streptococcal (GABHS) infection has not been reported in the radiologic literature. Sporadic cases of association of GABHS fasciitis and septic arthritis as a complication of chicken pox have been reported1--4 however, imaging findings of this condition have not been emphasized. We present a family in which two sisters with chicken pox both subsequently developed multiple sites of septic arthritis, fasciitis and myositis with GABHS and their impressive MRI findings. The awareness of the association of primary varicella and life threatening GABHS infection of the cutaneous and musculoskeletal system by radiologist interpreting the MRI images may facilitate earlier diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
