Abstract

The Association of Catholic Trade Unionists is a unique labor organization. It has grown in influence and today it is an important factor in a number of unions. The Association has entered a field that formerly was occupied exclusively by leftist groups (Socialists, Communists, and anarchists)--that of advising inexperienced and budding trade unions. In addition, the ACTU has given direction and support to dissidents within specific unions who were demanding reform in management or improved administration in the factory. The importance of these activities can be realized if one examines the functions and make-up of the labor movement. Newly organized workers may need direction and support. If they become involved in a dispute, they may need assistance in strike management and publicity, and legal advice. Lacking experience and resources, the newly organized workers frequently turn to leftist groups for aid in their struggles. Aid has usually been furnished, but, at least to the Communists, these occasions represent an opportunity to work with large masses in the hope of winning them to a particular cause. The aid unstintingly given is frequently responsible for the orderly and disciplined conduct of a strike and the presentation of the issues to the public. Under the cover of that aid the political group has often been able to gain influence and even control within the union. (Author's abstract courtesy EBSCO.)
