Abstract

Poison centers (PCs) have been shown to reduce system-wide cost largely by reducing the number of unnecessary visits to emergency departments. However, a debate has remained regarding the effect of PCs on inpatient outcomes. This study sought to determine a PC’s impact on hospital length of stay and hospital charges. The authors retrospectively matched 4968 toxicology inpatient cases treated in Illinois hospitals in 2010 with Illinois Poison Center assistance to 4968 toxicology inpatient cases without PC assistance.
