Abstract

Purpose: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is highly prevalent in older people and a leading cause of physical disability worldwide. Although the etiology of hip OA is multifactorial, recent evidence has demonstrated that bony hip morphologies, such as cam morphology and acetabular dysplasia, are associated with an increased risk of developing hip OA in the elderly. Other morphological variants might also pose a risk; statistical shape modeling (SSM) can be used to identify these variants by quantifying the whole radiographic hip shape.
