Abstract

Abstract The assessment of depression in the infant, preschool and early school age child is described. A variety of scales and interviews which are of potential use to the caretakers of young children are reviewed. The role of evaluation in caring for children with depression is stressed: beginning with awareness of the disorder; of methods to assess and monitor the depression; and of the need to understand the total picture of the child who is suffering from the depression.
