Abstract

The assessment and plan is the culmination of the oral case presentation. It consists of a brief summary of the case, a discussion of the differential diagnosis, an argument for the leading diagnosis, a diagnostic testing strategy, and a treatment plan. The first step is to identify the key findings in the case and use them to formulate a differential diagnosis. The next step is to make an argument for the leading diagnosis and a testing strategy to eliminate other possibilities and confirm the diagnosis. When a patient presents with a clear diagnosis, the main focus of the assessment shifts to the treatment plan. Pertinent evidence from all available sources should be evaluated and used to support the diagnostic argument, testing strategy, and treatment plan. Several examples of effective oral assessments are presented, with references to the supporting literature.
