Abstract

Art historical research in combination with the condition of artists’ unrestored works help in the determination of artistic intent. These criteria appear to confirm the proscription on varnishing the works of German Expressionists, particularly Kirchner and Die Brucke. However, the evidence concerning Emil Nolde, primarily his autobiographical books and his technique, indicates that it may be appropriate to use varnish in the treatment of his paintings.
