Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides information on the nature of the stone technologies from the Koobi . Fora assemblages, using experimentation as a means to advance understanding of how the artefacts from these early assemblages were manufactured. It will also report on enquiries as to the possible roles of stone artefacts in early hominid adaptation. The research operations reported in this chapter represent a holistic approach to lithic technology in which the technology is treated as a system. Materials flow through the system, starting with the selection and acquisition of raw materials and going on through various modifying actions to eventual discard or abandonment, after which geological and taphonomic processes begin to operate. The chapter has three major components: (1) studies of raw materials; (2) studies of artefact manufacture; and (3) studies of artefact use and discard.
