Abstract

The design of a new art museum in Berkeley, California, called for incorporating portions of a building dating from the 1930s into the finished product. Because the tight urban setting made it necessary to excavate the entire site, including beneath the facilities that were to be retained for the museum, the shoring team had to devise multiple solutions to myriad challenges. Close collaboration by all of the participants facilitated the development of a well-integrated, cost-effective shoring plan.
