Abstract

This extensive essay by Vladimir Markov presents a pioneering systematic attempt to analyze Easter Island sculptures and a critique of approaches to Easter Island art by early western travelers. Markov’s essay is informed by his own knowledge of European collections of Oceanic art and other art and ethnographical-historical writings of his time. The first part is concerned with historical and geographic encounter and the description and categorization of artistic form, technique, and location. The second part reflects on the function and symbolic meaning of the artworks.
