The Art of Anesthesia.

Abstract

This work, now in its seventh edition, is one which has long been recognized as a standard textbook on anesthesia. It is principally a plea for a better understanding of the art of the administration of ethyl ether. As such, it is of more value to the general practitioner who is occasionally called on to give an anesthetic, than it is to the specialist in anesthesia. Much other material is passed over lightly and given too little space. Other methods and agents are mentioned only to prove that ether or combinations of ether and gas are more desirable and safer. The material on the use of ether is comprehensive and informative, but in the discussions of these agents there are some important omissions; for example, in the chapter on local anesthesia there is no mention of toxic reaction to the drugs, precautions to be observed to prevent these reactions or
