Abstract The second in a series of examinations by the Centre* of problems of the Soviet Armed Forces This article is the first part of a lecture delivered by Prof. Erickson at a Defence Study Conference jointly held by Southampton University and the R.U.S.I. in March, 1970. The theme was ‘The Soviet Union in Europe and the Near East—Her Capabilities and Intentions’. A full report of the conference, containing 12 lectures presented by leading Soviet experts from the official and academic world, is available from the R.U.S.I. (See page 72.) The second part of this lecture, dealing with the Soviet Military Service Law of 1967, will appear in the December Journal.
