Abstract

THE JAMA NETWORK LOOKS TO THE FUture to continue its mission of education for all physicians around the globe. Our online journals, with multimedia content, rapid publication, and access from multiple devices, such as tablets and smartphones, facilitate new ways of communication. The power of the JAMA Network—JAMA and the Archives journals—can best be unleashed on the web. Our new web platform allowsmanynewfeaturesandbetterintegrationacrossthe network.Withthetablet/smartphoneapp,anyonearound the globe can access our content without charge for the remainder of this year. We are now pleased and proud toannouncethatapproximately90%ofourcontent(most of our scientific articles) will be published online first. Each week, we will publish 1 or 2 manuscripts online ahead of print. For authors, this means more rapid publication of their manuscripts to a larger audience, and, for readers, it means more immediate access to the best science in facial plastic surgery. The logistics of publishingthesemanuscriptssorapidlyandsimultaneouslymaintainingthelegendaryJAMANetworkeditorialqualityare complex and demanding of staff time. We are indebted to our editorial staff in Chicago, Illinois, for making this possible, especiallyCherylIverson,PaulaGlitman,Lauren Fischer, andeachmemberofthemanuscriptediting, electronic production, and new media teams. The JAMA Network continues its commitment to our print journal and has initiated a major redesign not only to make it more aesthetic but also to present our science in a more intuitive and informative manner. Our journal, renamedJAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, will launch in its new format in 2013. This complex design project has been directed by Ronna Henry, MD. As an added benefit, we will have access to JAMA Network medical illustrators to further enhance our print and web manuscripts. We would like to thank Dr Henry and her design team for their efforts to improve and enhance our reading and educational experience. Finally, we would like to highlight a new feature, “Surgical Pearls.” This section allows for a short description (2 journal pages) of an innovative technique with a video of the technique for the online journal. We believe that this section will be both educational and interesting. We also hope to encourage submissions from talented surgeons who would not necessarily write a researcharticlebutwhohaveanimportantmessagetocommunicate. We are fortunate that Stephen S. Park, MD, has agreed to coordinate this new feature.
