Abstract

The occasionally uneasy coexistence of multiple photographic collections within the same institution reflects the paradoxical promises and premises of photography itself Photographs function within a multiplicity of layers and roles within contemporary culture, and arguably have done so throughout the medium's existence. The creation of the Archives Center in 1983 - with significant photographic holdings - reflected a particularly complex situation within the National Museum of American History (NMAH). This paper will discuss the formation and current organization of the Archives Center (AC) in relation to other NMAH photograph collections, particularly the Photographic History Collection (PHC).
