Abstract

Good sound, good sightlines, and intimacy are probably the most sought after requirements of any multipurpose auditorium. How these goals were achieved in the 1300 seat “surround” hall for the University of Victoria was the result of a very close collaboration between all of the consultants, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, acoustical, and theatrical. Acoustical design goals for full scale music presentations midfrequency reverberation time 1.8–2.0 s fully occupied. Desired speech reverberation time 1.5 or lower. Background noise criteria for auditorium PNC 15–;20. Excellent sight lines were demanded from all seats. Various seating configurations were experimented with in model form. Movable reflecting clouds were incorporated and variable acoustical absorbing banners utilized. Slides, photographs, and perspective drawing available.
