Abstract

Current research into the ancient exploitation of silver in Anatolia is presented within the context of a larger project involving the collaboration of scholars from Turkey and the United States. Emphasis is on determining the location of ancient sources of silver and gold, tracing the evolution of metallurgical technology from Neolithic through the Ottoman period, and detailing the emergence of an international trade in metals from sources in Turkey to urban centers in Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine, and the Aegean. A survey of the major regions of silver mining in Anatolia is described, with the Boplkarda district chosen for intensive study. Sources of silver are correlated with artifactual samples by use of trace element analysis and lead isotope ratios.
