Abstract

Crack problems of a circular disc (cylinder) with an arbitrarily loaded radial edge crack have been analyzed using an accurate weight function method. An exact stress intensity factor for the uniform load case due to Gregory [3] was used as the reference solution for deriving the weight function. Particular attention was paid to assessing the accuracy of the new stress intensity solutions determined with the weight function analysis. Analytical formulae for the computation of stress intensity factors for arbitrary loading have been presented, together with numerical results for a number of basic loadings. Stress intensity factors for the single-edge cracked circular disc (cylinder) under a variety of practically important load conditions have been determined; the results are very accurate for any relative crack length a (the crack length/disc-diameter ratio) ranging from zero to unity.
