Abstract

When it comes to Arabic manuscripts of the Bible, and particularly the Gospels, there is common agreement on the great number and diversity of manuscripts. In addition to this, the claim that Arabic Gospel manuscripts were translated from various languages-Greek, Syriac, Coptic, and Latin-and from different text-types, points to both the complexity and the time consuming nature of any study of them. The purpose of this chapter is not only to present the variations found within the many manuscripts collated, but also to try to study the reasons behind this diversity. The chapter presents the case study, which shows the richness and the variety of the Arabic Gospel versions and demonstrates the pressing need for a comprehensive study of the different versions of the Arabic Gospel manuscripts.Keywords: Arabic Gospel manuscript; Bible; Coptic; Greek; Latin; Syriac
