The Arabic lexical units in dictionary by Teimuraz Bagrationi

Abstract

"Books of Dictionaries" by Teimuraz Bagrationi  is a lexicographical work dating to the first half of the 19th century. The dictionary is mainly explanatory, in addition it is of translational, field-terminological, etymological and encyclopedic nature. The author often finds out about the origin of this or that word whether the word is root Georgian or of foreign origin. In parallel by side the explanatory words is written in the Georgian and also non-Georgian letters  their Persian and Arabic, Tatar (Turkish), Armenian, Assyrian, Greek…. definition.The aim of the work is to reveal and collect the lexis in "Books of Dictionaries" by Teimuraz Bagrationi considered Arabic by the author to study and analyze their phonetic and semantic transformation, to identify entry means of the borrowings and establish their chronology.  In the article we present the lexical units of the first letter of the Georgian alphabet, beginning with the sound A, which the author indicates are of Arabic origin. These are: Ama÷i, Amilbar, Amir, Aram, Arajib, Arif, Akhi / Ah÷i, Aja. Based on the etymological-semantic analysis, their Arabic origin is determined.
