Abstract

The Germplasm Bank of Wild Species Project is one of the most advanced preservation facilities in the world and the first Chinese large scale research facility in the field of life sciences. Based on the archives,interviews and several biographies or news report, this paper describes the whole historical development of the project. First of all, it reviews the background of the project and traces the project approval process and the debate about the site selection. Secondly, it gives the project’s construction process a description from the management,design, construction and acceptance. Thirdly, it introduces the operation framework and state of the facility from four aspects: germplasm preservation, resource sharing, scientific research and scientific popularization. Finally,the authors attempt to draw some experiences from this project in five aspects of the opinion selection, architectural design, organization and management, international cooperation and resource sharing.
