Abstract

SYNOPSIS Mondi Forests, a division of Mondi Paper Company Limited, made a commitment to tree improvement in 1968. The objective was to manipulate the considerable genetic variation in the commercial tree species grown in order to improve quality and productivity. In 1983, when Mondi started construction on their 450 000 tonne pulp and liner board mill at Richards Bay, greater emphasis was placed on the production of hardwood fibre. This encouraged Mondi to embark on an imaginative, applied programme of vegetatively propagating Eucalyptus grandis and several hybrids to meet the rapidly expanding eucalypt fibre market. The programme capitalises on high-yielding clonal material for operational plantings and is governed by sound genetic principles to ensure continued improvement and benefits from clonal plantings in advanced generations.
