Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to apply fuzzy sets theory to solving the problem of shape recognition in sheet-bending design, and to attempt to establish a prototype expert system for use in English and Chinese environments for sheet-bending design on PC/AT. In the system, the product shape is first drawn by the drawing mechanism to calculate the required length during sheet bending. Then the shape recognition system is used to identify the input graph in order to search for the shape that matches the input product from the database. The fuzzy similar matrix method is then used to select the commercial size that best matches the product size, and to recommend the forming procedures and the required punch and die for sheet bending. Uneconomical size designs can thus be avoided. This system can use the expert system through the use of English or Chinese dialogue, and infer the required punch and die for sheet bending and display it with graphs by means of the inference engine.
