Abstract
Globalization, as an all-pervasive phenomenon, has extensively influenced the human resource management practices in many nations. In China, due to the country’s extraordinary economic growth in the past 30 years, selection and development of talent are at the heart of the burgeoning stream of research. Chinese organizations have witnessed an increasing use of various assessment techniques including the assessment center (AC) method as an integrated part of their talent selection and development process (Luo and Meng 2005). At the same time, various scholars have given a new impetus to AC research in China. The aim of this chapter is to inform practitioners and researchers of these recent, intriguing developments. In particular, we provide an overview of the development of ACs in China. To identify these recent developments we examine the evolution of ACs in China, current practices in different economic sectors of China based firms, as well as some cultural and operational issues in implementing ACs in China.
