The application of surface kinetic data to the industrial synthesis of ammonia

Abstract

Yields of ammonia have been calculated for the ammonia synthesis reaction under the industrially relevant conditions of high temperature and pressure, using kinetic parameters determined from experiments on single crystal surfaces at low absorbate coverages. The yields obtained are too low due to site blockage at the catalyst surface; the use of kinetics more appropriate to high coverage gives ammonia yields similar to published values.
